Hey all! Happy Valentine's Day! I love this day for many reasons. First there's the art people put up of their favorite couples or even poking fun at this holiday. Then there's the little gifts you may get from friends and family or your significant other, be it candy, flowers, the teddy bear, or even a simple hug. Finally, it's pretty great day to talk about one of my favorite things in a fandom... shipping.
Why do I ship anyways? Growing up, I wasn't the Shipper on Deck like I am today, but I can recall one of the very first things that I shipped and it wasn't even Disney. Whenever my brothers played Star Fox 64 and they got to the Zoness level, Kat would show up as she normally did and playfully flirt with Falco. When they encountered her again in the Macbeth level and she would again tease Falco, I always imagined Kat and Falco as girlfriend/boyfriend. I guess 7-year-old Fluffy was a shipper even back then. XD But why was that? I think the reason why was because of how they acted. In my young eyes, I thought their playful banter was adorable and often thought about what they would be like as a couple.
As I got older, I began to watch certain Disney movies again like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Aladdin. But the one I can credit to giving birth to my shipping quirk was none other than Beauty and the Beast. The romance portrayed in that movie was one of the best I had seen in such a long time. Not only did they have the whole 'opposites attract' trope going on, but the fact that they had to work towards seeing each other as friends first and then fall in love with one another really drew me in and made me want to see them succeed. When they did, I felt a sense of satisfaction that they got together.
After that day, any media I saw, be it a movie, anime, cartoon, and so on, I started to entertain the thought of shipping certain characters and how they would act as a couple or how they became a couple. One of my biggest sources for shipping is My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. The many personalities of the ponies was ripe for shipping. Of course back then, I used to be very... stuck on only shipping one couple for each character. Thanks to the fandom however, I began opening my eyes to different possibilities and shipping characters with more than one character. It's even gotten to the point where it's pretty hard for me to have OTPs (One True Pairing, for those who don't know).
I also had a preference for heterosexual couples, but later on, I became pretty fond of homosexual shippings. For example, before, I wouldn't even consider pairing Applejack and Rarity together. Now they're one of my favorite couples, once again thanks to the fandom and my love of 'opposites attract'.
I know at times there can be many flame wars and negativity when it comes to shippings. Heck, it can be pretty hard to ship two or more characters because of said negativity. I should know since at times, I still struggle with being okay with people shipping what they like. Of course, my goal is to better understand why people pair up certain characters and encourage them to keep shipping it because they like it.
Here I'd like to share some of my OTPs (in no particular order):
1. Raven Queen X Dexter Charming (Ever After High)
2. Inuyasha X Kagome (Inuyasha)
3. Knuckles X Rouge (Sonic Franchise)
4. Bowser X Rosalina (Mario Franchise)
5. Jack Skellington and Sally (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
6. Flynn Rider aka Eugene Fitzherbert X Rapunzel (Tangled)
7. Jessie X James (Pokemon)
8. Android 18 X Krillin (Dragon Ball Z/Super)
9. Fancy Pants X Fleur De Lis (My Little Pony Friendship is Magic)
10. Tadashi X Honey Lemon (Big Hero 6)
And the opposite side, what I call my NoTPs (in order from 'no, thank you very much' to 'never in a million years!')
5. Piccolo X Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball/Z/Super)
4. Celestia X Good!King Sombra (My Little Pony Friendship is Magic IDW Comics)
3. Shadow the Hedgehog X Amy Rose / Silver the Hedgehog X Amy Rose (Sonic Franchise) (I hate the two ships equally)
2. Ariel (Little Mermaid) X Jim Hawkins (Treasure Planet)
1. Logan aka Wolverine X Jean Grey (X-Men Franchise)
And that's a wrap! What are some of your favorite shippings or not so favorite shippings? Leave them down in the comment section below. And now I leave you with what I consider my theme song.
Happy Valentine's Day, everybody! Hope you spend it the way you want it!
